WEST PALM BEACH, FL (March 13, 2024) Looking for love? You are in luck! To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day weekend- Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is offering a St. Pitties Day Adoption Promotion on Friday, March 15 through Sunday, March 17, 2024. All adult Pitbulls and Pit-mixes (6 months and older) are fee-waived during this adoption promotion.
As you stroll through the kennels of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and many other animal shelters in Florida, you may come across several dogs that we affectionately refer to as “square heads.” These dogs come in a variety of sizes and shapes, but they all share a head that appears to be somewhat “square.” Some people might initially label these dogs as “pit bulls” or “bully breeds.” However, in reality, they are simply mixed-breed dogs that have become one of America’s most popular and beloved dogs.
There are many myths about “pit bulls,” and this adoption promotion is a chance to discuss and dispel those misconceptions, while helping them find forever homes. In fact, the American Temperament Testing Society rates pit bulls 87.4% temperament-passing —that’s a slightly higher passing rate than Golden Retrievers, who got an 85.6% pass rate!
The term “Pit Bull” is not a specific breed but rather a generic, umbrella term that encompasses all dogs with similar traits, including American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and mixes of those breeds.
There are many reasons for the high number of dogs labeled “pit bulls” in shelters—including breed-specific policies that may make it difficult for families who rent or live in an HOA community to keep their dogs and misinformation about the breed, which causes potential adopters to look over them.
Pit bulls are no different from any other dog breed in terms of their anatomy, temperament, or likelihood of causing a serious attack.
