Rescue Readers

A program where adults and children (accompanied by an adult) can read aloud to our adoptable dogs and cats.

Read to Adoptable Animals

An exciting free program for adults and children to read aloud to adoptable animals at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.

If you’re looking for a new way to engage your kids, reading to shelter animals is a perfect fit. Not only are the children able to develop their reading skills and boost self-esteem in front of a non-judgmental audience, but it also provides valuable socialization and love to the shelter animals.

Step by Step Instructions
  1. Visit our Pet Adoption Center and scan the QR code at the Rescue Readers station to check in.
  2. Pick up your Rescue Readers badge and wear it at all times while reading to the animals.
  3. Grab an animal behavior handout to help guide your visit and better understand our animals’ body language.
  4. Borrow a book or cushion from the station, or feel free to bring your favorite book from home.
  5. Spend at least 15 minutes reading to one of our shelter animals — choose from any dog or our list of approved cats.
  6. When you’re finished, please return your book, cushion, and Rescue Readers badge to the station.

Every Rescue Reader must be accompanied by an adult at all times!

How often can I participate in the program?

Readers are welcome to participate as often as they’d like during our hours of operation, Sunday through Monday from 11 am to 6 pm.

Do I have to read to the same animal the entire time?

No. Readers are welcome to move between animals. However, we ask that you spend at least 15 minutes with each animal unless an adopter arrives or the animal signals they are ready for a break. This helps provide the greatest benefit and enrichment for our shelter pets.

Can one adult supervise multiple children?

Yes. One adult may supervise up to two children participating in the program.

Can I bring my own books?

Absolutely! Feel free to bring your favorite books from home.

Do you accept book donations?

Yes, please! We are always looking to grow our Rescue Readers library and greatly appreciate book donations.

Can I bring food or drinks with me?

Drinks are allowed in the animal areas, but food is not permitted.

Are there any safety precautions I should keep in mind?

Please be sure to sanitize your hands between animal rooms/areas. If a scratch or bite occurs, please report it to a staff member immediately. Adult supervision is required for every Rescue Reader at all times.
