WHY? This week, there were confirmed cases of Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) at a local shelter in Palm Beach County. In response, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League’s Wellness Clinic is pleading for the public to have their dogs vaccinated – a service the Peggy Adams offers. Canine Influenza virus is very contagious to dogs.
What is canine influenza and how is it spread?
Canine Influenza virus is very contagious to dogs. It causes a respiratory infection in dogs that looks like “kennel cough”. Common symptoms include sneezing, nasal discharge and frequent coughing. Dogs can have a fever, decreased appetite and lethargy. Some dogs can even develop pneumonia.
Canine Influenza is spread by direct contact with a sick dog and by contact with an environment or people that are contaminated with the virus. Canine Influenza can survive in the environment or on people’s clothing or hands for 12 to 24 hours before it dies. The good news is that it is easily killed by handwashing with soap and water, normal washing of clothing and bedding, washing food/water bowls and toys with soap and water and with a cleaning product such as Rescue Disinfectant (available for purchase on Amazon).
All dogs are at-risk for Canine Influenza if they haven’t been vaccinated. The vaccine takes a minimum of 4-5 weeks to be effective. Therefore, it is important to get vaccinated as soon as possible. If your dog should develop symptoms, treatment for Canine Influenza is supportive care. While they can have secondary bacterial infections that could be treated with an antibiotic, Canine Influenza is a virus and must run its course.
“We strongly encourage everyone to reach out to their family veterinarian to discuss the Canine Influenza vaccine,” says Dr. Alyssa Comroe, Director of Shelter Medical Services at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. “To encourage the importance and urgency of getting dogs vaccinated, we have added three special walk-in dates for the public to get their dogs (who are 7 weeks and older) vaccinated from 10am-2pm on Saturday, June 26th, July 10th and July 24th.”
