WEST PALM BEACH, FL- (December 7, 2020) Between the COVID pandemic and the holiday season, more people than ever are shopping online – but buying a pet online is never a good idea. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is urging those in the community to adopt, don’t shop when looking to add a furry friend to their family.
If you buy a dog from an online seller, pet store or flea market, you’re almost certainly getting a dog from a puppy mill, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Puppy mills are high-volume breeders that put the profit over the welfare of these animals. In the United States alone, it is estimated that over 194,000 dogs are trapped in puppy mills; there are approximately 10,000 active puppy mills and nearly 500 US pet stores are selling puppies from these puppy mills.
According to the Better Business Bureau, online puppy scams are also rising sharply since the pandemic. With more time at home, many would-be-pet owners have looked into buying a puppy online and after spending hundreds of dollars or more, realize that the pet does not exist.
To play it safe and save a life, adopt your next pet from a shelter or local rescue organization. Today, there are more than 1,000 animals at local shelters and rescues right here in Palm Beach County in need of new loving homes. Each year, it’s estimated that more than one million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States, simply because too many pets come into shelters and too few people consider adoption when looking for a pet. “By adopting from an animal shelter or rescue group instead of buying a pet online or from a pet store, you’ll help save the lives of two animals—the pet you adopt, and a homeless animal that can be rescued because of space you make available,” said Rich Anderson, Executive Director and CEO of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.
