Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is honored to be impacting animal welfare locally and globally with our partnership with Humane Society International and being the point agency in Palm Beach County to save five dogs from Korean meat farms.
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League will be receiving the dogs (ages two to five years old) on Monday, July 1st. A total of fifteen dogs are being transported to partner shelters in Florida.
A team from Peggy Adams will be traveling to Daytona, Florida on Monday, July 1st, to meet the dogs at the Halifax Humane Society and transport them to its West Palm Beach shelter. The dogs are expected to arrive at Peggy Adams between 3:00-4:00 pm.
These dogs are among almost 200 dogs and puppies that were rescued by Humane Society International (HSI) from a dog meat farm in South Korea in February 2019. It is the 14th dog meat farm that Humane Society International has closed since January 2015 and is part of Humane Society International’s campaign to end the cruel dog and cat meat trade in Asia. To date, HSI has rescued nearly 1,800 dogs from these types of farms that raise dogs for human consumption and for sale as pets.
As part of each farm closure, HSI has a veterinarian examine the dogs and vaccinate them against a wide range of diseases. The dogs are quarantined on the farm or at a temporary shelter in South Korea with no dogs permitted in or out for at least 30 days prior to transport overseas. After quarantine, the rescued dogs are brought to the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. While pet ownership is on the rise, adopting instead of buying a dog is still not a widespread practice in South Korea. There are, however, signs that attitudes are changing as younger generations are more likely to have a dog as a companion.
“Peggy Adams is a proud emergency placement partner for the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International and we’re glad we can help these dogs find the loving homes they need and deserve,” explains Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. “The cruelty that these animals endure from the dog meat industry is incomprehensible. These dogs are mainly killed by electrocution, taking up to five minutes to die. Hanging is also practiced. We are grateful for the incredible work HSI is doing to end this senseless torture.”
HSI enforces the 20-year contract that has been signed by this farmer that ensures he will stay out of the dog meat and any other animal related industry. HSI follows up regularly to ensure compliance among all past farmers.
