WEST PALM BEACH, FL (May 10, 2023) Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League recently held their second TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return) Spay Day on April 29, 2023. An impressive 406 community cats received free TNVR surgery – adding to the over 500 free TNVR surgeries performed earlier this year. These surgeries included the spay/neuter surgery, rabies vaccination, microchip, and a tipped ear to signify a completed TNVR surgery.
This community TNVR Spay Day included 10 doctors, 33 veterinary technicians, and 11 veterinary students that joined together from across Florida to perform surgeries. This group included a team from Operation Catnip Gainesville, students from the University of Florida, and teams from Veterinary Emergency Group, Humane Society of Broward County, Gardens Animal Hospital, and ACCESS.
Working alongside Peggy Adams’ staff were 57 volunteers with duties all throughout the event, including check-in, surgery prep, instrument sanitization, cat & trap organization, recovery, and more.
This diverse group included first-time and veteran trappers working side by side. TNVR is a program in which free-roaming cats are humanely trapped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated for rabies and other feline viruses, ear tipped, and then returned to their outdoor homes. TNVR has been shown to be the least costly, most effective, and humane way of stabilizing and decreasing community cat populations.
“Thanks to everyone who participated in this important TNVR Spay Day,” said Sue Berry, CEO of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. “Completing these 406 spay/neuter surgeries on community cats will have a tremendous impact on the lives of many free-roaming cats in Palm Beach County, by controlling population growth and slowing the flood of homeless kittens into our shelters.”
TNVR Spay Day was an important event as we are in Kitten Season – the time from early spring through late fall when cats give birth to countless kittens. Kitten Season creates a strain on shelters, including Peggy Adams, due to the hundreds of newborn and young kittens coming into their programs. This results in the need for increased staffing and foster families.
