WEST PALM BEACH, FL (January 20, 2023) Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League recently held a TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return) Spay Day on January 7, 2023. Over 130 people brought in 422 cats for this free TNVR surgery.
This diverse group included first-time and veteran trappers working side by side. TNVR is a program in which free-roaming cats are humanely trapped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated for rabies and other feline viruses, ear tipped, and then returned to their outdoor homes. TNVR has been shown to be the least costly, most effective, and humane way of stabilizing and decreasing community cat populations.
This community TNVR Spay Day included 12 doctors, 25 veterinary technicians, and nine veterinary students who joined together from eastern Florida to perform surgeries. This group included a team from Operation Catnip Gainesville, students from the University of Florida, and a team from Veterinary Emergency Group. In seven and a half hours of operative time, this collaborative team completed 422 spay and neuter surgeries.
There were also 47 volunteers and 42 Peggy Adams’ staff that assisted in duties all throughout the event, including check-in, surgery prep, instrument sanitization, cat & trap organization, recovery, and more.
“We would like to thank all of those who participated in this important TNVR Spay Day,” said Sue Berry, CEO of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. “All of you are a champion by making a brighter future for our community cats in Palm Beach County. The tremendous success of our Spay Day could not have happened without your efforts.”
TNVR Spay Day was an important event in order to prepare for Kitten Season- the time from early spring through late fall when cats give birth to countless kittens. Kitten Season creates a strain on shelters, including Peggy Adams, due to the hundreds of newborn and young kittens coming into their programs. This results in the need for increased staffing and foster families.
