Bahamas Shelter Dogs Rescued by Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League are Ready to Find Their Forever Homes

October 17, 2019

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (October 17, 2019) Just over a month ago, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, in conjunction with IFAW, GreaterGood.org, and Wings of Rescue, coordinated a rescue flight for the transport of 158 dogs and cats at the Bahamas Humane Society so that they can help save more animals left homeless by Hurricane Dorian. Peggy Adams took in 25 dogs from that rescue flight and are now ready to find their forever loving homes.

Several of the dogs rescued from the Bahamas arrived with diseases that are common in the islands – heartworm and tick-borne diseases (Ehrlichia and Anaplasma).  Some of the dogs also tested positive for intestinal parasites such as hookworms. However, all the dogs have been treated by the doctors at Peggy Adams with 30 days of antibiotics (doxycycline) for tick-borne diseases. (With tick-borne diseases, even with treatment, some dogs may test positive throughout their lives and never have symptoms.)

The dogs that were heartworm positive are now under treatment and follow up procedures will be scheduled for the dogs. Peggy Adams will cover the costs of these treatments.

Dogs with intestinal parasites received the prescribed five days of medicine, as well as a follow-up regimen two weeks later.

Most of the dogs are still quite thin, so the medical team at Peggy Adams will suggest a multivitamin. With some regular feeding and a new loving home, these dogs will quickly put on additional weight.

As with all pet adopters, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League recommends that those who adopt a pet from the Bahamas schedule a follow-up appointment with their regular veterinarian.

“All of us at Peggy Adams are happy that we could rescue these animals and provide them with essential medical treatment needed for them to be placed in a caring, loving, forever home they each deserve,” said Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.

For more information about these dogs, please visit PeggyAdams.org or call 561.686.3663. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is located at 3200 N. Military Trail in West Palm Beach and the adoption center is open daily from 11am-6pm. Peggy Adams will be closed for staff development on Tuesday, October 29th.
