Animal Crisis in Palm Beach County- Local Shelters and the Public Asked to Assist in Saving Additional Lives

September 17, 2018

Palm Beach County, FL (September 14, 2018) Although Palm Beach County has not been struck by a hurricane so far this season, we are in the midst of a different type of storm; an animal crisis that requires our community’s immediate attention and assistance, as lives are at stake.

On Monday, September 10, 2018, Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control issued an urgent call for help to the animal rescue community.  The County’s shelter is at critical capacity, overcrowded, and adoptable Palm Beach County animals are in danger of being euthanized due to a lack of space.

In response, and as part of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League’s continued commitment to the effort to save the life of every local animal in need, Peggy Adams has taken in 58 cats and 15 dogs in the last two days from Animal Care and Control. These animals are in addition to the 1,142 animals Peggy Adams has pulled from Animal Care and Control over the last 12 months – at risk animals right here in our own local community.  Humane Society of the Treasure Coast and the Brevard Humane Society are two additional shelters that have also responded to this local crisis by taking animals in this week from Animal Care and Control.

However, Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control desperately needs help from other local rescue organizations and the public. Today, the County shelter has 359 animals in its care and each day they receive an average of 50 additional animals.

For the public, please consider adopting or becoming a foster volunteer to help save the lives of local animals today.  Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control currently have special adoption promotions.  Visit PeggyAdams.org and pbcgov.org/publicsafety/animalcare for more information.

If a rescue organization can help, they should contact the following staff at Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control: Sunday – Thursday:  Suzy Dannelevitz – sdannele@pbcgov.org 561-233-1252 or Tammy Roberts – troberts@pbcgov.org 561-233-1281; Friday and Saturday: Kelly Diegert – kdiegert@pbcgov.org 561-233-1219.
