Nearly 50 dogs have been rescued from a Palm Beach County home and are now receiving care at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League after their owner became overwhelmed.
Peggy Adams responded to a call from Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, seeking assistance for an overwhelmed caretaker who could no longer manage about 50 dogs.
“They had a situation of an overwhelmed caretaker for animals, for dogs. And they needed our assistance. I chatted with the team here, and we had the capacity to help, and we went out there, and we got all of these cuties,” said Alexandra Serrano, director of operations at Peggy Adams.
The situation highlights how quickly pet owners can become overwhelmed, especially when animals are not spayed or neutered.
“We start having puppies. We start having litters. And you think maybe, you know, I can find homes for all of these, and you don’t find a home for one of them. And then now you have three unsterilized animals. Happens again. The pattern continues on and things get overwhelmed and things get out of hand,” said Serrano.
Once the dogs arrived at the shelter, staff set up an assembly line to provide each dog with a physical exam, vaccines, microchips, parasite treatment, and a plan for spay or neuter surgery. Many of the dogs are under 20 pounds, and some are older, requiring dental work, blood work and foster care.
“We’ve determined that some of them need comprehensive blood work. A lot of them do need dental. They do need to get spayed and neutered. So now the next steps is kind of figuring out when and how to schedule that,” said Serrano.
The shelter expects the dogs to be up for adoption within a month.
