Whenever visitors walk by Roxy’s kennel at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in West Palm Beach, Florida, she presents them with one of her most prized possessions: her stuffies.
Unfortunately, Roxy’s sweet gesture hasn’t helped her land a forever home. In fact, there hasn’t been much interest in the pup.
“I haven’t seen a lot of people want to meet her yet,” Mara Gleason, the marketing and communications associate at Peggy Adams, told The Dodo.
Roxy has been at Peggy Adams for nearly two months, making her one of the shelter’s longer residents.
“We do have a lot of dogs that look like her — larger dogs that are possibly bully breed mixes — that often get overlooked even though they’re consistently some of the sweetest dogs in our shelter,” Gleason said.
While Roxy hasn’t caught the eye of a potential adopter yet, she’s a favorite among the staff at Peggy Adams. “Everybody loves her,” Gleason said.
The pup enjoys playing with her stuffed animals — but she prefers the company of people.
“She’s very social,” Gleason said. “She does the thing with the toys to get attention. But once she’s one-on-one with a person, all she wants is the person. She’ll leave the toys behind.” Roxy is a playful pup who loves belly rubs and back scratches.
Before she came into the care of Peggy Adams, she was at one of the shelter’s partner facilities, an underfunded animal control center in rural Florida. Not much is known about Roxy’s past. “We really don’t know if she had a home before, and if she had all of the comforts and cuddles that dogs should have,” Gleason said.
Roxy is 7 years old, which has also made it difficult for her to find a home. She — and the other dogs and cats who are 7 and older — are part of the shelter’s “Grey Whisker Club.” During the entire month of March, Peggy Adams is waiving adoption fees for these senior animals.
If you’re interested in adopting Roxy, you can visit her at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in West Palm Beach, Florida. The shelter is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. There’s no appointment needed, and they offer same-day adoptions.
Roxy may be your new best friend.
“She is just so sweet with everybody she meets,” Gleason said of Roxy. “I think she would do really well with any type of person. She’s going to be a great companion.”
